2. Magnesium Citrate, Best for Constipation
Magnesium citrate absorbs well (20–30%) while also providing a gentle osmotic laxative effect. Unabsorbed citrate draws water into the colon. This dual action makes it the ideal form for people who need both magnesium repletion and bowel regularity. The tradeoff: above ~300 mg elemental, most people get loose stools. 4. Magnesium Taurate, Best for Heart Health
Magnesium taurate bonds magnesium to taurine, the most abundant free amino acid in cardiac muscle. Taurine independently lowers blood pressure (−4.0 mmHg in meta-analysis), stabilizes heart rhythm, and improves cardiac function. No taurate-specific human RCT exists, but the individual component evidence is strong. Cardiologists recommend taurate more than any other form for heart-focused supplementation.

5. Magnesium Oxide, Cheapest, Worst Absorbed
Magnesium oxide has the highest elemental content (60%) but the lowest absorption (~4%). A 400 mg tablet looks impressive on the label but delivers roughly 10 mg into your bloodstream. The rest stays in your gut, causing diarrhea. The two evidence-backed uses: migraine prophylaxis at 400–600 mg/day and severe constipation. For everything else, oxide is the wrong form.

6. Magnesium Malate, Energy and Muscle
Magnesium malate bonds magnesium to malic acid, a compound involved in the Krebs cycle (cellular energy production). Theoretically best for fatigue and muscle pain, including fibromyalgia. Absorption is good, GI tolerance is moderate. The evidence base is thinner than glycinate or citrate, mostly mechanistic logic and a few small trials. 7. Magnesium Chloride. Topical and Oral
Magnesium chloride absorbs at 9–11% orally (Firoz 2001). It is the form used in topical "magnesium oil" and foot soaks. Whether topical magnesium meaningfully raises systemic levels is debated. The evidence for transdermal absorption is weak compared to oral supplementation. Orally, chloride is a reasonable mid-tier option but offers no advantage over glycinate or citrate.
