How to tell if a complex is oxide-dominant: Multiply the capsule weight by the percentage each form contributes. If the label shows 400 mg elemental magnesium from a 750 mg capsule, most of that has to be oxide — glycinate and citrate are physically too large to deliver that much elemental in that little space. In a complex, oxide is almost always the volume filler: it lets the label claim a high total elemental number using very little capsule space and very little money.

This is the single most important thing to understand about complex products. Because oxide is 60% elemental and pennies per gram, a formulator can reach an impressive "400 mg magnesium" claim using mostly oxide, then add small amounts of glycinate and taurate so those names appear on the label. Magnesium L-threonate

A threonic acid chelate developed specifically to cross the blood-brain barrier. Its evidence is aimed at cognition and is thinner than marketing suggests — largely animal work plus small human trials, often industry-funded. It is also by far the most expensive form, at only about 8% elemental magnesium, which makes a clinically meaningful dose in a multi-form blend essentially impossible.

The mechanistic work is genuinely interesting: research in Neuropharmacology examined how L-threonate regulates structural and functional synapse density (Sun et al., 2016), and a trial in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease tested MMFS-01 for cognitive impairment in older adults (Liu et al., 2016). Magnesium taurate

Magnesium paired with taurine, an amino acid the heart concentrates. Human evidence for the malate form specifically is limited, and the "energy" claim rests more on the biochemistry of malic acid than on trials of the supplement.

Malate absorbs reasonably and is gentler than citrate on the gut, which makes it a sensible daytime option. But in a complex, it usually appears because it fills out the form count without adding cost, not because a trial showed the blend needs it.

Magnesium orotate and aspartate

A complex can serve this goal if it delivers adequate total elemental magnesium in well-absorbed forms — but so can a single well-absorbed form, at lower cost and with a dose you can verify.

A systematic review in Nutrients examined the effects of magnesium supplementation on subjective anxiety and stress (Boyle et al., 2017), concluding the evidence is suggestive but limited by study quality. Later work found magnesium combined with vitamin B6 affected mental health outcomes (Noah et al., 2021), and a PLoS One trial reported an advantage for magnesium plus B6 over magnesium alone in severe stress (Pouteau et al., 2018). Worked example. A 7-in-1 product claims 400 mg elemental magnesium from a 1,200 mg proprietary blend. Average density = 400 ÷ 1,200 = 33%. If the blend were equal parts of all seven listed forms, the average density would land near 18% — nowhere near 33%. To reach 33%, oxide has to be roughly half the blend by weight, contributing about 360 mg of the 400 mg elemental total. The remaining six forms split roughly 40 mg of elemental magnesium between them — under 7 mg each. That is the arithmetic, and it holds regardless of how the marketing reads.
